Always liked them but never owned one of their cds.
Now my lad is playing certain songs over and over eg The sandman, St Anger, One - which cd would you guys advise I get for him to keep his interest going? - they have rather a large back catalogue!

Most ppl (well my friends anyway) would say Ride The Lightening is the best, I like "master of Puppets" the best, i think it depends which you heard first!
Black album onwards was start of the downward spiral ![]()
The 1991 "Black" album (which is officially titled "Metallica") is their biggest selling album by a mile, and contains "Enter Sandman", "Sad But True", and "Nothing Else Matters", which are the ones the average rock fan knows.
If he's interested in the heavier stuff, go back to Ride the Lightning (although this does has the awesome ballad "Fade to Black" on it) or Master of Puppets.
But I'd definitely start with the "Black" album and let him decide if he prefers that more melodic rock side, or the harder stuff. If it's the former look to "Load" (an excellent hard rock album that Metallica die-hards hate), if that's the latter, look to Puppets or Lightning.

Yeh, that was teh album where they sold out. i remember borring it from my mate at school, gaev it back to him the following day,
Him: "well what do you think?"
Me: " that one, that one, and that one will be massive singles, MTv will play them to death"
I wish i hadn't been right
Guess 'cos at the time I had grown out of Bon Jovi, Guns N Roses, was getting into my Anthrax, Metallica, and more "alternative" rock.
An old colleague liked that album of covers they did,he was a big Metallica fan, but I really hated that one.
I think the 'black' album is fantastic but then Ive never been a fan of really heavy stuff, its just right for me with its mix of melodic tunes with a harder edge, so Im a 'black album' onwards fan
'One' on guitar hero 3 is one of my faves to crank up on the surround sound too hehe which is on the album before 'Metallica' If I recall

Metallica Play New Track - Video Available
On the culture show on BBC2 last week, they went behind the scenes with metallica on tour, not v insightful, they wouldn't give much away about the new album, but they did say over the summer there will be a 30min special on them.
I love Justice For All. The Black album is also a favourite of mine but was the start of the selling out process.....

Master of Puppets
Ride the Lightening
The 'Black' Album (Metallica)
Those are the ones I'd recommend to someone wanting an intro into Metallica, but I personally like ...and Justice for All.
The St. Anger song doesn't reflect the content of the album as a whole, nor the style of Metallica's previous albums; I like the song but I'm not particularly keen on the album.
