AV Receiver dead?

Competent

Hi,

My venerable Sherwood Newcastle R945 av receiver appears to be dying. It powers up, but there's no sound from any input, including the internal radio, and the receiver cannot detect the optical input (tried two hardware sources). I do get a tiny thump sound through the speakers when I turn the output to them on and off.

Of course this is perfect timing, as we're moving into a new flat and I wasn't planning on buying a new av/amp!

So, does anyone have any ideas, is it worth trying to get fixed?

Or, any suggestions for a new amp (~£500?), current system is a 1080p samsung lcd tv, sony blu-ray (360), virgin V+ (all using hdmi), and a very old marantz cd player that gets used now and then... just have a 5.1 speaker setup.

Ideas much appreciated...

Elite

Our Denon died a few days before Christmas 2008, took it to 2 different places to find out about repairs and both said, if they could get get parts, emphasising the if, they would be bloody expensive.

Decided to get a new one and bought an AVR-1909, now superseeded by the AVR-1911.

Although it was the same range as our old one (19 series), it was a huge improvement, not only in connections and features etc, but the sound quality too.

Got it from Richer Sounds, think they have the AVR-1910 (recently discontinued) at a fairly good price if you don't mind a slightly outdated model.

All the best

Gerald.
