I think the source is the problem, Neiliboy.
My SD and HD pictures are top notch, no complaints there at all.
But I'm using a SKY HD box, via HDMI.

Gonna order a panasonic G10 off amazon after reading rave reviews for £720 odd and see if that fares better.

Saw the TX-P42G10 in Comet on Saturday - very impressed with the PQ

The G10 doesn't get very good reports about its SD picture quality either.
That's SD through HDMI too.
Using SKY+/scart as a source will only exacerbate any problems.
The large screen will only mutiply the problem too, in that you'll notice any picture defects all the more.
I definitely think if you're looking at a 40-42" LCD/plasma, you really should stop penny-pinching and get a SKY HD box, sorry.

whoa!! It aint me - its my dad!

When my current sky contract finishes i'll switch to HD and buy a new TV then. I'm quite happy with my CRT to be honest Happy

My dad however......He cant workout why my sisters 4 year old panasonic 42 inch PD6 with exactly the same setup has far superior PQ than this Sony LCD.....he describes the current Sony as too 'wishy washy' and is seroiusly unimpressed. He was a TV engineer for 30 years too Winking

Probably just down to her TV being 720P and his being 1080P.
720P will always handle SD better than 1080P.
If he were to get HD and Blu-ray, the role would be reversed and he would have bragging rights!
He should at least consider an HD box.
If he buys one off ebay, he needn't subscribe to the HD channels.
But he'd benefit from the HDMI connection (and the larger hard-disk for recording).

Panny 50PZ70 here, 1080P full res and 50" screen in a relatively small room.
Connected to Sky+ via gold plated ribbon scart (JVC, about a fiver back in the day) and it's absolutely fine.
Very few artifacts (if any) are seen but yes, HD boxes do a little bit better but not, imho enough for me to pay for the extra subscription.
They already get £55 a month off me for basic channelling and 2 Multirooms so they aint getting another tenner just to enable HD ouput!

On that note though, I am considering freesatHD but still not 100% convinced

Great SD pics here on Freeview with 1080p too.
Try looking for some settings on AVForums? And make sure it's not on Dynamic (or whatever the Sony equivalent is..)

47" LCD with similar set-up as Jimbo - decent scart (recommended on here back-in-the-day) ancient Sky+ box. Sometimes the sd is bad, sometimes it's great, but it's really dependent on the quality of the source - just watched Life in sd, excellent quality. I've got FreesatHD integrated into the tv and there is a noticeable variation in the quality of HD programming too - I can't blame that on connectors.

Channel quality varies whatever you do.
But, in my experience, HDMI gives a marked improvement in overall picture quality over scart.
It would be hard not to, seeing as you're using digital rather than analogue.
So individual channel quality will still vary, but overall quality will be better, if you get my drift.
I swear, I can get such a good SD picture on some channels that I forget I have an HD option for the same channel.
That's on this (Sony) TV and the old (Toshiba) one.

I might return my TV to Argos, as the backlight bleed is beginning to annoy.
Here's what it looks like, on paused dark scene on a DVD.
You need a source to show it, no source and the screens look perfect.
I think this is why many people say they don't have it, because they're looking at a no-source screen.
Argos don't have any stock to exchange it with though.
What's my legal position there, am I allowed to wait for stock?
I don't want a refund, I want to try another set of the same.
