Shame eh. They did say IF you could get a good one it was a superb set. Shouldn't need to 'gamble' when buying a TV though.
Waiting a while to replace it? Gone back to the old 32(?) for a bit? Must seem tiny...

We will pay the price but we will not count the cost..

No, I've bought and intalled a replacement already.
LG 42SL9500 LED edge-lit LCD.
Had seen some cracking reviews for it, but needed to ditch the Sony first.
It's much, much better than the Sony, but so it should be for £300 more(ish).
I don't know the model number, but another mate of mine recently bought a new Sony TFT, it has free sat in it and is 100hz if that helps, so is a newer model than that one. It must be bl00dy good, as he hasn't bought an LCD until now, as he didn't think any were as good as his Sony CRT until now.
The 40W5500 is a current 100hz model, admars.
If it's a 100hz model he's bought, chances are it's a W series model.
The Z range is 200hz.
But even that suffers from inconsistent backlights.
The only model that doesn't seem to get criticism for it is, unsurprisingly, the LED X range.
but it's not that one as it's free sat not free view, so it may be the slightly newer w5810. All I know is he's very anal/snobbish about this sort of thing, so if he says blacks are black etc, they are pretty damn black ![]()
In my local Euronics, there's an LCD Sony 52", which is really nice, but at £2,500 it should be!
I don't think I've seen the LG LED TVs, but I know the Samsung ones they had in there looked really good, cost a bit more than the others, but difference was noticable.

Nothing wrong with the black levels on Sony's W range at all.
Just the stupidly inconsistent backlighting, which is common to them all.
Here's a (poor) photo of the backlighting on my Sony.
Obviously ignore the 'pause logo at the bottom left, but you can clearly see the 4 light patches coming from each corner?
They are really instrusive on dark scenes and letterbox movies.
