Returning Liteon DVD recorder

Hi guys

No-one seems to have asked this of late, but forgive me if there's a thread.. just point me at it and I'll go away.

I have a LiteOn DVD recorder that seems to be knackered. It won't read any of it's own unfinalised discs. So, first of all, can I salvage these discs? I have a DVD writer in my computer, but that won't even recoginise the discs. Alternatively, is repair an option? Can I only only finalise these DVDs on another LiteOn recorder?

Secondly, I want a new DVD Recorder. The LiteOn was a bit clunky, it took a while to load discs, sometimes took around 10 seconds to start recording, and it didn't have a hard drive. I had no problems with the quality of recordings though.

I have a PVR, but I like the idea of an HD for editing out adverts etc. before burning to discs.

I see Pioneer and Panasonic mentioned here a lot, what's the general feeling on LiteOn - obviously I would like to be able to finalise those discs, and if they have become faster I would be happy with that.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated!

Thanks

Hello papanez

OK, first things first - how long ago did you buy the Liteon, and what model number is it? All Liteon DVD Recorders have a 2 year manufacturer's warranty, so if you still have the receipt (or if the manufacture date on the back is less than 2 years ago, you shouldn't need the receipt) you'll be able to get it repaired free of charge - sounds like you need a new DVD drive in it.

Even if you still buy a new DVD/HDD Recorder, you could keep the Liteon for another room. Winking

If you want to buy a DVD/HDD recorder, you must keep an eye on the spec. A lot of the budget brands do not allow editting of the sort you want! You CAN do it on the Liteons though, which is why they are so popular! (So cheap, and yet very versatile)

Some things to remember with Liteon:

1) They have stopped manufacturing DVD Recorders and when the stocks are gone from our shop shelves, you will never see them again.

2) Although their components tend to fail, you DO have that 2 year warranty to fall back on, and their customer service department is excellent.

I recently sent my LVW-5006 back for the 3rd time due to drive failure and it was back to me in 4 working days with a new drive (best drive ever - it works brilliantly now) and a new main board. All completely free of charge.

If your machine is less than 2 years old, and you want to know what to do next, go look at our Liteon forum where you will find Liteon's telephone number and lots of other useful info. Check out the FAQ section first.

If your machine is over 2 years old, and you decide not to buy a Liteon, I would be more than happy to have those unfinalised discs posted to me for finalising and I could then send them back to you. I've done that for a few people now. Happy

Wonderful! Thanks so much for your excellent reply. I have an LVW-5006 too, I'll take a look at my reciept tonight and at the Liteon forums.

Thanks again for taking the time to reply. If the repair option doesn't work out, I may well take you up on your offer of finalising!

No Problem. I'll keep an eye on the thread in case you ask for help again. Happy

If it's still under that 2 year warranty, get the drive changed, as the new drives that Liteon are fitting (SHM-165P6S) work incredibly well (quiet and fast) and really give the 5006 a new lease of life! 8)

Been offline for a while - but here's an update. Got the machine back after a week, with a new drive. Works ok again, but takes ages to read discs. Also, discs that had stuff burnt to them towards the end of the last drive's life seem to be dead. I've got a few other machine I can try them on, otherwise Sue I might let you have a try!

I think I'll be buying a Panny soon...

Thanks again for all your help.

Out of interest, can you please tell me the serial number as it appears across the top of the set up menu. This will tell me which drive they have fitted.

Those discs that were burned on the old drive may just have too many errors to be recognised now, but I am more than willing to try and finalise them for you, if you want me to.

If you click on my name, then when you see my profile screen, click on the icon next to me name (its a chest I think), this will enable you to send me a personal message off the forum.

Please send me your email address so I can sort things out with you.

Sue
