Mostly Harmless

I see this is currently on offer at under £35 from Maplin. Does anyone have any experience / comments please?

I have a Centurion 12V player, that came with a 5" LCD screen (separate). It seems dated now.

Plays every DVD Format I've ever put in it (except RAM), multi-region out of the box, and plays MP3 and JPEG discs. Can't comment on Divx as I don't use the format.

It's about 3 years old now and going strong, never gone wrong at all as yet!

Hi Sue - looks like you have come to my rescue again! - I have the Leiker, which I bought for my motorhome. The problem is after going to all the trouble of locating a hack, I discovered my 600W inverter wasn't 'man enough' to run the LEIKER.

I saw these on the Maplin web site going relatively cheaply and my only real concern was it's multi-region capabilities. (I have most of the MASH series from my daughter in the States still to watch!) - sad I know?

I have sent several emails requesting info, but they either don't know, or are not interested, because to-date, I have not had a reply.

Sounds like just what I am looking for - thanks again Sue! Tongue

Hi Sue - spoke too soon! Confused I have just checked the FAQ's on Maplin site and they have finally answered my question. (3rd time lucky - They obviously couldn't understand the term . . . . . multi-region?!?!) : see my question/their answer below:

Q) HELLO ANYBODY THERE? Fearing that this may be a black hole I will STILL ask my question again, albeit, in a simpler form, just in case there is a problem of understanding, - What region is this DVD player, please? - D ROBSON
A) This is a region 2 player - it is not multi-regionable

Sue is your's this model? - I suspect the TECHIES at Maplin are the rejected 16 year old morons from Dixons or PC world, and as such, have difficulty in reading and writing, let alone understanding anything not to do with games consoles, or MP3 players.

If your's is this particular model, (and not an earlier ' un-de-brained' one), I will get a couple, (one for my mate in the UK).

There's an image on this link:

Thanks again, Sue

It's the same shape and style but clearly a later model.. Mine also says "Multi-media disc player" on the front.

I know it's dodgy to rely on but I'm willing to bet it'll be multi-region straight from the box, and their reply to you was a standard one for any DVD player they sell.

I'll have a search around the old interweb and see if I can find more details...

I'm convinced it's multiregion out of the box. It is switchable between PAL and NTSC outputs. There are no hacks mentioned here on the DVD Reviewer list for any Centurions (surely there would be if they were needed) and I found the same base unit coupled up with various screen options etc on other websitres, and some mentioned multi-region. No one said it wasn't.

Go for it! I saw the same model exactly on another site for about £95!!!

Well; we've both been down to the Hacks forum, cos I spotted your posts in there, so if it does turn out to be Region 2, you can try the hack that is listed there. I bet the firmware is similar between models.

Post back if it isn't multiregion, and I'll delve further if needs be. Winking
