I assume you already use a scart lead from TV to DVD. Scart is the better option if you have choice between the 2. There was an earlier thread comparing the 2 and depending who you listen too you can always get confused. If you want to get the best out of scart then you should get a good quality lead(OFC-oxygen free copper & gold connectors).

It would be very difficult to tell them apart. Some TV's work better with S-Video than SCART and visa versa so you might have to try them both.

I don't think anyone would be able to tell the difference between a £10 SCART and a £50 megga cable when connected to a budget DVD player where the SCART socket on the player would be as cheap as possible, the only ones to avoid are the 99 pence type.
SCART is the European standard and works well so if you have it already connected with SCART it is the easier option.

Like I said there are plenty of grey areas. PS my idea of a good quality scart cable is just over £10. Am I a cheapskate?

It's generally accepted the order of quality for connectors is:
Best
Component output
RGB (SCART)
S-Video
Composite (through SCART or otherwise)
Worst

I've bought some expensive interconnects (IXOS) and some not so expensive (ProfiGold) - damned if I could really tell the difference. I'm sure the mind is telling the user that 'cause £40 has been spent it 'must' be better

Your not saying that composite is equal quality to scart? By composite you do mean the 3 phono jacks connecting TV to DVD do you?
And RGB is also another joker in the pack. I can accept that RGB Scart may be better than non RGB scart (some people wouldn't know RGB if it hit them in the face!) but I'm not sure I can accept putting normal scart on a par with composite.

I agree with Reckless in the order. Composite (yellow phono) is definitely a last option connection

RGB (fully wired) scart and S-Video is very little difference. The only real benefit of S-Video is that it frees a Scart for another device!

scarts are multi-purpose. They can contain rgb, svideo, and composite. It just depends how many wires are in it and also if your player is sending rgb, svideo or plain composite down the lead.

Scart is good because when you turn on your VCR or DVD player the channel automatically goes to the correct one.

I once said buy a cheapish SCART and got slated at least i'm seeing plenty of support now. When I go into the Panasonic shop and see some pillock spending £40 on a SCART i'm laughing.

I had a cheap one, so I thought i'd try the oxygen free Hitatchi one, the picture quality was the same, as with the cheap one (I had one in each SCART for quick comparison). The Hitachi one was better quality in terms of lastability cos I know the cheap one seems like it will fall apart. As for gold plating that's just a gimmick, the standard (perhaps Aluminium or steel not sure, will take years to oxidize in your house, so will last for ages). On the DVD setup I can change the setting to RGB, S-Video or Bitstream I think; i'll check, but I think it's already on RGB

Using the three phono component jacks will get a slightly soft picture which still looks good, but SCART is significantly better, so you should really go with that unless you are running low on sockets.
