Harmless
If I was to buy a scan now would there be any problems with the player??
Will I get the player and I will need to update the Firmware???
Can someone explain and help.

Are you mad? Have you not read all the problems mentioned here on this site? If you buy one then you deserve all you get.
Why not stop being such a cheapskate, save up an extra 100 quid and get a decent branded player ie. Sony, Panasonic.

If you look further down there are a number of people who say they are satisfied with the player. Also my friend is often at the Scan store in Bolton and will get one for me, so if I have problems with it he will take it back. Saving on all the problems with delivery and returning the player.
Also why would people put messages on the board saying that the player works fine? People are more likely to complain that compliment so I am not taking all the complaints to hearts.
Anymore advice out there, maybe a little more constructive.
Also any help with the Firmware thingy??

I have posted previously saying that I am highly satisfied with my Scan, as are three people I know who bought one subsequent to seeing mine. They have not had any problems. I believe a lot of the initial problems stemmed from the MPEG decoder chip that was installed in earlier (pre-Oct 26th 2000) machines. The latest Scan's have redesigned harware using the Analog Devices ADV7172 chip. They give you a lot of technology for the money and, to be honest, I think the value is great. There is more to life than DVD's and I don't want to fork out £400 on a premium machine when £180 will buy me a Scan.
The main question mark is over their customer services - if you can get around that problem then I'd go for one.
If you order a new machine now I suspect it will be supplied with firmware newer than that currently sent out by Nelley (i.e. later than V2.04) so no need to upgrade. Nice to know that upgrades will likely be available in future though.....

Microstar seems to have summed things up pretty well.
The Scan SC-2000 seems a pretty good budget player and therfore a good first DVD machine.
The 100 pounds or so you save over the cost of a name player of similar spec will buy you a good few DVD's to start you collecton. Also you get a player which will play MP3's and that can be made multi-region and macrovision free for no extra cost.
