is Twitter above the law?

So, I'm reading a football website, & one story links to another site, then that one to another, & I end up reading about an ex football agent who is saying the most amazing abuse & libel I've ever read on his Twitter page.

The kind of thing this man was writing, if he said it on a public street, he'd be arrested there & then.

I'm not repeating any of it here, the target in question is the football manager Sam Allardyce, (along with some really nasty stuff about his wife) the man writing it is an ex football agent by the name of Peter Harrison.

So, is Twitter "above the law?"
No newspaper would dare to re-print this stuff, so why is it allowed on Twitter?

I think Twitter should remove this if the person writing it can't back it up. And the language is very offensive.

I'm not sticking up for Sam Allardyce, I have no feelings about him one way or the other, but I really think this is repugnant.

twitter is just a medium. It's the person making the comments who is responsible for them

Also you can't be arrested for libel, an individual (or company) has to take you to court. Only if the court finds you guilty and you continue to repeat the libellous statements can you then be in contempt and arrested.

I think anyway. Winking

But you can be arrested for using offensive language & making threats against someone can't you?
I admit I don't know that is a fact, but I would hope it is correct.

Has he been threatening to hurt someone? Afaik unless you are making threats of violence, or incitement to violence, pretty sure offensive language only applies in person, unless it is racist in nature but that may perhaps still have to include threats.
