The Artist will win everything.

Gary Oldman should win for Best Actor.

I see that the Harry Potter films were snubbed again.

The biggest money maker, bums on seats franchise since Star Wars, but not one nod to the actors like Alan Rickman.

Deathly Hallows Part 2 has three nominations in the technical categories.

Lord of the Rings never got the nominations it deserved either.

as much as it behooves me to say, while the HP films are wonderful spectacles and adequate translations of the source material, there's no way they're up there with the big boys in anything BUT technical acheivements. Rickman was good as Snape, and he played the part well, but it wasn't award-worthy by any means. He was on screen for less than 10 minutes in the last film. In a 2 hour movie that's a glorified extra.

And that's ME saying that

Return of the King cleaned up at the 2004 Oscars, picking up Best Picture, Director, Adapted Screenplay, Original Score, Original Song, and a bunch of technical awards aceing every category it was nominated in.  I agree with your point though that bums-on-seats pictures seldom get the plaudits but that's Hollywood schizophrenia at its best - always wanting to be art but also a commercial product at the same time.

Although I haven't seen many of the nominated pictures, the ones I'm looking forward to and think will deserve to win are The Artist and Scorsese's Hugo.

I was really surprised to see Woody Allen's Midnight in Paris nominated a couple of times. I guess it proves that names count, because to me that was just an average romcom. Pleasant enough, but very quickly forgettable. Just the fact that it's a Woody Allen film that has got those nominations, in my opinion.

This is the first year that Pixar have not been nominated for Best Animated Film.

Although, after Cars 2 I'm not surprised Winking

Weird how everybody is down on Cars 2. I quite like it. I thought Ratatouille was more of a misfire.
