KODAK Files For Bankruptcy Protection

BBC News is reporting that Kodak is filing for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy Protection in the US in the hope of keeping the loss-making company afloat.  For anybody who has been involved in any form of photo/cinemato-graphy, this is sad news and the end of an era.  Eastman Kodak has always been a key player in photochemical imaging - the first producers of roll film, first producers of the first mass-market camera (the Brownie), makers of the first single-negative colour motion picture film.  The company was outpaced by the speed of development of digital electronic imaging and is now paying for being behind the times.

Some commentators are already writing obituaries for the company, but I suspect the Kodak/ Kodak Eastman name will survive in one form or another. Just not necessarily as part of a company with a proud history of image recording in the 20th Century.

Sod'em, I hope they rot.
They bought out the company I shot weddings for, which had been a profitable going concern since 1966.
Then a couple of years later some faceless git in America decided it didn't fit in with their image so just closed it down. No offer to sell it or allow a management take over just pulled the plugs out and locked the doors.

Nothing to do with the fact that the industry had gone digital in the two or three years they had it of course.

I used to be with it, but then they changed what 'it' was.
Now, what I'm with isn't it, and what's 'it' seems weird and scary

As for kodak, well the digital age finished them, as we develop instantly our own photos (at home on computer/printer or in high street machines in Boots) using flash memory cards.

You have to keep up with the times or sink.

Yeah, there wasn't much room inside to put a 35mm roll of film.

When I think of Kodak, I think of polaroid cameras (too big and cumberson for most people, and you can use digital for "bedroom" shots these days, no wonder the relaunch failed), film (who uses that anymore?), and paper (for developing prints, or later printing to).

The only one of these three that even remotely looks profitable now is photo paper for printers, and they have to compete with the printer manufacturer and endless third party offerings there. Confused

Kodak & Polaroid are/ were two separate companies. They did cross swords when Kodak used Polaroid's instant picture idea in which Kodak lost & had to pay out a ton to Polaroid.

No you need a DSLR for that, with a decent flash set up.

I know this because...
