Weight Loss - 2012

All

First up, apologies if there's already a thread for this, if there is I couldn't find it (lots for 2008 though Happy)

A little over 5 years ago I decided I needed to lose some weight. I'd spent the 5 weeks just before Christmas working in New York and ate way, way too much food (they really don't get "portion control" over there).
I came back weighing a hefty 18st2lbs (I'm 6'3") and felt pretty fat.

The healthy eating started and I won't lie, it was hard going. But thanks to my wife (who made most of the food) I persevered and lost 3 stone in 3 months, when I hit my 30th birthday in July I'd reached 14st11lbs and figured that was enough (even though the BMI figures suggest that was still overweight!).
After that time I started 'enjoying' my food a little too much again and sat at 15st4lbs for a while - not too bad since I still felt pretty good and the 34" waist trousers zipped up nicely.

However, it soon creeps up. Last year I ate and drank loads more than I should given my sedentary lifestyle. My excuses...
My wife was pregnant (and eating any food in sight) and then our daughter was she ate (and still eats) loads to keep the breast milk flowing and yet still she still loses weight...but unless I start miraculously lactating (I don't want to of course!) then I need to start eating better.

Anyway, I was 16st8lbs on New Years Day 2012.
Have been eating healthily since then, not starving myself just eating good and healthy food, and I've reached 16st0lbs already.
My aim is to reach 14st11lbs again by the beginning of July.

Now what I've found really useful just recently is the MyFitnessPal.com website and iPhone app - all free.
It's helping me to track the calories I'm eating and expending through excersise and also sugar consumption etc. (something I don't really think about enough - especially given the amount of fruit I'm eating!). It's actually quite addictive now.

Anyway, anyone else going to join me in busting the bulge for 2012?

Making healthy food to eat at home is a time consuming task, so not easy when you have children to look after as well.
I know that my wife would struggle to prepare the food at the moment - but luckily it's me driving it and so she lets me get on with it.

Chickpea burgers (an hour to prepare) with sweet potato wedges last night (along with steamed sprouts on the side)...suffice it to say we had to open a window!

Long time lurker and member, old name was spangles, but 2012 has seen me redefine myself and with it a new name and new me - (i'm not that grumpy really...)

I have struggled with my weight since being a teenager and it yo yo'd and had problems dealing with it, have done most diets to death but it was never long lasting, when at my heavyist i weighed in at around 23 stone at 5' 11" - and with it came all the usual co morbidity problems, type 2 uncontrolled diabets, sleep apnea amongst other things.  I ended up on roughly 20 tablets a day and injecting insulin, and was heading down hill big time.

To cut a long story short, i was offered Bariatric surgery about 13 months ago and it was eventually carried out mid October of last year ( 2 weeks before my eldest daughter got married!) - after a 3 day stay in hospital they let me out and  since then i have lost just over 3 stone and am now down to 17stone, it was a drastic move to take and fully realise how hard it is to lose any excess weight and i really admire those that manage it without help, for me right now i dont remember ever feeling this well, the diabetes has gone and i get a full nights sleep again - clothes are a new experience for me! had two new sets of clothes in as many months!.

My hat is doffed to Miles for managing his continued weight loss, but i just know without intervention i could never have done it - it was truly a life saver for me.

(I hope no one thinks i am high jacking the thread! - I just understand how hard it is at this time of year when resolutions are made and slide by - you have to be made of stern stuff to keep it up with all the temptations that are put in front of us)

Hope it goes well for you Miles

And if anyone has questions about bariatric surgery and how it affects your life i'll be happy to give you the highs and lows  its made me appreciate life again!

Happy New Year to you all!

Grumpy

Not at all mate.

Drastic indeed but well done nonetheless on the result...it can't of been easy.

Well i had read so many horror stories about it to be honest, it nearly put me off, but then the Net can sometimes overload you with negatives and i have to say, even though your accepted for surgery its still a long haul before its done, i lost count of hospital visits and group therapy sessions i had! and if i had to make the choice again i would still go for it, the very few minor issues i had are far outwieghed (scuse the pun) by the benefits iv'e had - (the wife reckons its like having a new man in the house) - nothing like seeing your waistline drop from a 46 to a 40!

Grumpy!

Super Admin

As I think I mentioned in another thread, a friend of mine has gone through the same thing, and it's just great to see how it's changed his life. Great to hear it worked out for someone else too!

I try to cut down on pints as part of a diet, and the wife says i get far too grumpy sober, and says have a pint and cheer up. Yes it is a Vicious cycle.

I've started the year trying to eat healthy too.  I never over indulged over the Christmas as Oct/Nov for me were killer months at work where I must have eaten out about five times a week!  Add the big weekends drinking and zero gym sessions due to long hours and I was starting to feel some movement running up the stairs!

I've decided not to go extreme and cut out every vice in my life so it's healthy eating and portion control going forward for me as a lifestyle change rather than a temp fix.  Drinking beer on the weekends at the start of a nightout has been banged on the head and now it's either wine or vodka/cranberry.

I've started back at the gym now too and it's only been nine days but I'm feeling so much better!  I've started doing weights/pressups alongside my cardio and I think that makes a big differences toning up.

I'm going to check that website/app out as I do count calories but always in my head.

Good luck everyone.
