As expected the cars behind the accident were turned around one by one by the police & drove back down the 'wrong' side of the motorway. I was wondering how they are told to drive. ie: keep to the left 'as per UK but still on the wrong side or keep to the right & remain single file or are there other instructions?
The news & the police say there was fog around but one of the drivers that passed about 5 minutes later said it was wet but there was no fog.
I wonder if this and the news that fatalities rose in the first quarter this year for the first time in many will change the governments tack on raising the speed limit to 80.
(even though I suspect the increase in deaths are more related to the bad weather at the start of the year)
It's been a while since I drove in fog on the motorway, or heavy rain for that matter, it always shocked me (especially with fog) how some people drove like it wasn't there. I doubt that's changed much.

because they now have 4 lanes open and speed restrictions in place when conditions
are less than perfect.
the M54 on the other hand, is a nightmare. what you see is drivers who think they've been
hard done by on the M6, putting their foot down and blitzing along to make up the time they've
"lost" by being restricted to 40, 50 or 60 mph on the M6.
as you say, this doesn't make any difference if its dry or wet... they all seem to think they're
invincible.

Not in the slightest. Driving my truck along the M20 in horrendous conditions always puts me on my guard, slowing to 40-50 as conditions allow. Still doesn't stop the pricks screaming past me as if I'm standing still. ABS and traction control will only do so much, after that it's sheer momentum of a ton of metal moving over water

Is there a reason they don't have helicopter footage this morning? Is there a reason why you think you need it?
Let the emergency services do their work and the relatives grieve for those who sadly lost their lives.

Apparently on the news last night, they were saying that weather conditions hampered the rescue services to the point that rescue helicopters couldn't get to the scene...
