Insurance question?

We are buying another car. It seems that they want us to take out a new insurance. We only need 2 cars insured until the older one is sold. What do others do when they change cars but have 2 cars for a short time? They quoted us £1200-00 for a second car alone.??????????
I am fully comp.

I've used a short term insurance company before just to cover me for a couple of weeks till the car sold, wasn't much from what I remember, definitely less than £100 when I last did it a few years ago

Insurers 'usually' let you have both on cover for a temporary period for a nominal fee....as long as you don't take the mick with the time.

Are you insured via a broker?
I suspect what is happening here is that normally to have 2 cars insured you need 2 policies. The£1200 quote has come about as they have done a quote for a second policy for the second vehicle (whether it be the old or new car I don't know) and since you have no extra No Claim Bonus to put on the second policy as it is already in use on the first policy then the quote reflects that.
However, as has been pointed out I thought that this technique to insure 2 vehicles was a thing of the past and they had begun allowing temporary additional cars to be insured on a policy for up to 2 weeks or something for a small fee. The reason this was brought in, I think, was to allow for people to insure courtesy cars etc. For example, if your car goes in the garage for repairs and you take a courtesy car you can have it insured on your policy for a small fee. This is an additional vehicle not a swap. If your own car was to get stolen from the garage say, then I would expect it to be insured.
I am by no means an expert though, I just worked in insurance for 4 years about 10 years ago.
