If so, what package do you recommend?  I've played with MakeHuman and DAZ Studio 4, wasn't impressed, and I'm dithering about going for a paid package like Poser.

What are you interested in doing with it?

There is always the free CGI suite that is Blender:

Competent

As Rob said, it depends on what you're wanting to do - I assume you're referring to 3D only? If you're looking at doing hard-surface modelling (eg tech stuff - cars, building etc) then I'd recommend Maxon Cinema 4D - everything on my site has been created with C4D: www.jamiemartindesign.co.uk

If you're looking more at sculpting, and creating organic forms, then one program that has been recommended to me (but I haven't yet used) is Modo

I like your work!

Actually, now I come to think of it, doesn't Maya offer a learning edition with some limitations (like a burnt in watermark)?
