Jobs quits as CEO of Apple

After being on sick leave all this year, Steve Jobs has quit the position of CEO at Apple. Apparently he will now be Chairman (a lesser role) and Tim Cook is tipped to take on the CEO position.

Jobs has battled cancer for 7 years, and has suffered ill health...I can't help worrying if it is now terminal? Must be bad for him to have had 7-8 months off so far this year.

There goes Apple's share price.
The guy has done a very good job of turning Apple around, so he deserves a lot of respect for that.

Aye, I know Apple are currently who the "cool kids" like to think is the IT spawn of satan, but you can't deny they revolutionised the phone market and effectively created the tablet market. Not to mention have an OS that is based on BSD (a very good thing!).

I'm sure now it won't be long before the "cool kids" go back to hating Google, which will be ironic as they will probably by then all own at least two Android phones and tablets.

The iPhone is a great piece of kit, but I find it hard to be nice about a company that deliberately made it difficult/impossible to use anything but their software, thus actually limiting their product for no purpose other than monopolisation.

Apple isn't the only one - not by a long shot! - to ever do this, but they definitely have points subtracted for making it this way.

You could also argue that it is the closed eco-system they've created which makes it so easy to use and less prone to errors. They're controlling the input sources meaning that there's fewer things that could go wrong. This means they appeal to the mass market, where the money is.

You only have to look at how fragmented the Android deployments are to see what a mess people can get in to with it.
Or look at MS Windows which has to run on God knows how many different combinations of hardware with tons of different driver versions - and people wonder why it decides to crash every now and again (admittedly it has been a lot better since Windows 7 came along).

Since when has iTunes been easier to use than drag-and-drop? Happy

I plug in my iPhone and it auto-synchronises. I'd say that's pretty easy.

I also drag my music in to the "Playlists" section and it automatically adds a playlist with the music from the directory. It's configured not to copy the files to its library, so no duplication of the files etc.

We've had this discussion before. Happy   Sure, if you want it to sync, it's great. If you don't, there's no way it's easier than drag and drop.

Love em or hate em, you'd all be using crap Nokia's if Apple didn't come along, there'd just be no Android. Happy
