It's too early to call for the end of cuts as we haven't really seen what's in the budget and don't really understand the current police numbers.  When they were talking about the total number of police numbers in London (with only 3,000 on the street), was that just uniformed officers who could potentially be patrolling or did it include all the CID, SO19 and every other branch of the Police?

Has anyone really looked at the Police overtime budget seriously?  I'm not talking about the obvious overtime that was required here, but the general use of overtime.  How much scope would there be to cutting overtime but actually recruiting more Police?

If the PM makes a statement in the House of Commons that more Chief Constables are agreeing that they can make the savings without affecting numbers but ACPO can have a go at politicians for criticising them (when everyone else was doing the same) without disputing that fact, who are we to belive?

Am I correct in thinking that historically when unemployment is increasing and public expenditure from the treasury drops there is always a rise in crime/ tensions/ rioting etc. If so then it is quite honestly ridiculous to even contemplate a reduction in funding to one of the most important emergency service .

I was wondering that myself.  I think they could probably cut huge chunks off the wage bill by stopping huge overtime payments, and having some extra staff to cover those hours regularly, therefore not at an inflated rate of pay.  (Its obviously just an assumption, but I would hazard a guess its true.)

Hopefully not needed! Does seem like a huge police presence combined with a lot of arrests and rushing them through the courts has brought some calm to things.

Of course I'm avoiding the news because I've not watched the Arsenal game yet, so it probably kicked off big time. Winking
