The goverment is considering more powers for the police to give instant spot fines for being caught tailgating, or bad and reckless driving.
You either pay cash, or get taken to the nearest ATM (cash machine), just like foreign police do to us when on the continent.
I think this will be a great way of cutting down on tailgating, which I detest.
It might also make foriegn plate drivers here, be a bit more considerate, as they know at present they are getting away with almost anything, due to the red tape involved, especially excessive speeding.

This however I think will just be another excuse to stealth-tax drivers and swell Police coffers.
And before the anti-motorist brigade have a go at me, how about the Mobile Phone laws?
Driving with a phone in your hand texting is a definite case I'd agree with the fine.
Driving with a phone at your ear *if it affects your driving* I'd agree with the fine.
Sitting at a set of traffic lights and checking or replying to a text whilst stationary with the handbrake on, looking at the phone at any point to check the time etc are just ridiculous examples of mugging a driver for the cost of a fine when it has nothing to do with their driving ability or safety.
This may begin with all the best intentions to stop bad and reckless drivers but the opportunity for serious abuse and number crunching in the favour of the Cop involved is staggering IMHO.

We will pay the price but we will not count the cost..

You will have the option of refusing the ticket and having your time in court.
The issue with the current proposal is there isn't enough traffic officers out there now, as all forces are facing cuts in staff where are they going to come from?

The scheme would pay for itself. If a pair of policemen pull over 10 people an hour and 9 of those pay the £100 fine in case they get worse in court, they make £900 per hour for each pair of policemen. Lets say it costs £25 to process each ticket they issue, by the time you've paid two coppers and admin etc, they make £75 per ticket, therefore nicely cushioning themselves against the cuts that have been forced on them.
