Another anyone wanna value this car thread

Ok my wife was involved in a car accident this weekend which will probably end up going 50/50. The car has just been assessed and we were told probably will get written off. The garage will be contacting us tomorrow to discuss this but I am currently trying to figure out the value of the car to be able to tell if their offer (when it comes) is fair. I have looked on autotrader but prices differ wildly and this only gives an idea of what they are u for and not going for. So I looked on eBay completed auctions and those prices vary wildly too. So is anyone up for the challenge? Spec below

Nissan micra
1.0cc
1998 S reg
47,000 miles so very low
Air conditioning
Silver
Full service history
Mot until July 2011

Think that covers it all. We know it isn't worth loads but obviously the more we get the more we can put towards a new one. Cheers

Selling it you would probably have gotten about £500 (up here anyway) but as it's an insurance jobbie I'd be asking for at least £1500 if not better.
It's a small and therefore desirable car, no mechanical defects and exceptionally low mileage, it also had a phenomenal amount of sentimental value.

I know I'm the first to complain and shout about the whiplash claimants pushing up premiums but in a genuine case where you're going to lose your car I say get everything you can from them cos they're gonna get it back in the next few years of increased premiums anyway.

And good luck (fancy an 04 plate Zafira? LOL Grinning)

No I wasn't, I was warning people off Smart cars and Daewoo/Chevvy Matiz range.
There are tons of other small cars I would steer clear of but Micra's were reasonably decent and apart from that I was commenting from a "how to converse with the guy from the insurance company" point of view... if I wasn't how can I know how much sentimental value is in Bezza's missus' car?!?

I don't like the 2 seater smart cars in spite of them being made by Mercedes, I do like the look of the 4 seater ones though. The Matiz was the worst car hire we had in Spain, I couldn't drive it as there was not enough room in the drivers seat, too narrow. Just to point out I did not ask for one it was the only car available to us at the airport, I changed it 2 days later once other cars were available.

How much scope is there to get them to pay more than their first offer then? Supposing he comes back with £500, how would I go about getting them to increase that offer? On Autotrader I have found 7 Nissan Micra's all listed which are similar mileage and age and are from £1100-£1500. Would showing copies of that be sufficient?
Also, would sentimental value really come in to it? For us it would obviously (it was her first car after all Winking) but do insurers really adjust for that?

I can speak from experience here, the mother in laws micra was written off 2 years ago and is a late P reg top of the range model (SLX?) with very low mileage, less than 47k IIRC.

At the time, I looked at others and it's hard to find that model and they were all around £1500 but the most the insurer would offer was £900 minus the salvage and that was 2 years ago. This was even after providing documentary evidence of the cost of a replacement.

It won't matter one bit about the sentimental side of it, the low mileage or even the condition.....all they do is look at a book for the market value. It will also be on your policy that the result in a total loss claim will be a market value payout. Their market value will not be the amount you will need to buy one of equivalent condition/mileage.

If it's not badly damaged buy it back and repair it yourself...

A Cat-D write off, S-reg Nissan Micra?
About as appealing as a hefty kick in the nuts.
Don't get me wrong, it could probably be repaired fine and serve the driver fine.
But they would have to accept it would be absolutely worthless to anyone but them.
