BT Landline problem..

i've back & forewards with BT over this for about a week,  so it's doing my head in now..

Problem = no attached phones working,  line powered phones won't even ring, but the little led that flashed when it's ringing attempts to flash (very weakly, but it's there) self powered phones ring fine, but when you answer all you get is feedback & a muffled dial tone, if you pick up the phone to try & hear the dial tone, nothing happens, no tone, as if the phones not connected.

have allready tried unplugging all the handsets & trying them in alternate sockets but to no avail, i've also bought a cheap wallphone to try, but also to no avail.

However, my o2 BT landline internet is working fine (& i disconnected it whilst testing the other handsets, it made no difference)

i havn't changed or altered anything, one day they just stopped working,

BT are insistent the problem is on my end of the line, but it seems to me that BT arn't sending enough voltage down the line ?

any ideas before i tell BT to stuff it & rip it all out in manly huff....

Hmm strange. I thought your ADSL used exactly the same line as your phone, just a different part of the spectrum. I don't suppose picking up your phones disrupts your internet connection?

I'm guessing the very first socket into your house is what has the ADSL microfilter on it, and all other phones come off that microfilter rather than each one having it's own? That might have gone faulty, it's not uncommon (though usually when they do it's ADSL that suffers not voice).

all my sockets are the old pre filter type, so i have to use micro filters on each socket,  i've tried them in every combination, & none work Sad

the ADSL is plugged into the master socket, but also works from all other sockets (pain in the arse doing it, but needed to make sure each socket in the house was working & the modem worked fine on each of them)

my o2 BB is about half a meg slower than normal, but other than that, it works fine Confused

have you got the bell wire still attached in the sockets seeing as they are quite old? These can sometimes pickup RF bleedover and cause issues.

wiring info here

the socket is unaltered, so i assume it's connected, (but iirc, the seperately attached microfilter disconects it) the thing thats getting me, is that nothing has changed on my side of the line, so i don't really see how the issue is on my side Confused

as far as I know the seperate micro filter does not stop the bell wire from causing issues. It sounds more like an earth fault to me.

Seeing as you have such pants voice quality Im gobsmacked they havent sent out an engineer stating the usual if its your fault you will be charged etc etc......

Dumb suggestion...

Disconnect everything, and try the wallphone in the test socket in the main socket (the one behind the faceplate). If it doesn't work in that, then it is BT's problem.

15+ year old socket = no test socket Sad  i have however removed the face plates on all the sockets to look for any obvious conection faults, & they all look fine Sad

i actually bought a new style BT master socket to fit, to try & get better ADSL speeds, but never got around to it,  problem is, if i try changing it over now, BT will just say thats the problem...

Seeing as you have such pants voice quality Im gobsmacked they havent sent out an engineer stating the usual if its your fault you will be charged etc etc......

i have zero voice quality,  they don't work at all.

TBH,  the thing i keep coming back to is the internet (provided on a BT line Via O2) if thats working, but none of the voice handsets work, then ergo, the line ok, & the sockets are ok, & the problem has to be the voice service ?  backed up by the fact that the "standard" socket powered wired handsets don't seem to be getting enough power ? (possibly running to earth ? as Stu suggested ?)

Elite

is this a flat or a house?
where does the wire first enter your house/flat?
is there a small oval or square box with a screw in the centre where the wire entwers the house?
the first ext from that box should be a master socket with a BT logo

it's a house, but none of the sockets have a logo, (they are very old, at least 16yrs which is how long we've had the house)

the master socket is at the bottome of the stairs, near the front door, & that was the first socket i checked after unplugging everything else,  i even borrowed a phone from next door to try, this is also the socket that i plug the ADSL modem into,

i know the obvious thing is to blame the old sockets... But, if thats the issue, then why is the internet unaffected Confused
