The Forums Help and Useful Information Thread

Super Admin

This will eventually be a collection of useful information and links to threads on getting the most out of the DVD Reviewer forums.

How do I Quote other people's text?
The easiest way is when you are already replying to someone's post. Just highlight the part of their message you wish to quote and a blue quote box will pop up with the text you highlighted and a link to quote it. Clicking on that link will insert the quote automatically into your reply box.

What links are acceptable in signatures?
Advertising of any sort is strictly prohibited. This includes family businesses, mates websites, if it is there for the purposes of generating income of any sort, it is NOT PERMITTED.

Are affiliate links allowed?
No. If you are including links for products on other websites and they feature an affiliate link, then remove the affiliate link. It's that simple, just don't do it.

How do I Link to a YouTube Video?
A number of ways should work, the easiest is to paste the full YouTube URL into your message. You don't need to make it a proper link, but it doesn't matter if you accidentally do. [youtube] tags also work around just the correct part of the embedding code, but there is no benefit to using these really, so no need to make more work for yourself.

What is With this News Ticker Thing?
Currently only showing BBC news items, this will be extended in the future to include other sources. It should be generally relevant to the section of the forums you are browsing. Clicking a news item gives you the option of discussing it as well as reading it. When you discuss a news story it appears in a specific thread for that news story, so if multiple people discuss the same thing they don't create multiple threads.

Is There a Mobile Version of this Website?
Yes, as of March 2011 we now have a special mobile version of this website. If you visit the forums section of either DVD Reviewer or The Reviewer Forums you will automatically be redirected to the mobile site if you are using an iPhone, iPod or Android based web browser. iPad users are not currently redirected.

General Discussions on Site Layout
If you have a problem or a suggestion regarding the layout of the forums, post it to the following thread rather than creating a new one:

I like the idea behind the News ticker, specifically the opening of discussion threads for it...

Updated to include information about affiliate links and links to company sites in signatures. I will be going through various offender's posts over the next few days and removing as many as I can find.

What's the syntax to quote a specific person from a previous page?  The automatic quoting doesn't work.
EDIT: sorted.
It's:
bollocks.
I can do it but can't get it to appear here. Even though I'm putting in CODE tags it's using what I type. Still, I know now. Up to you RJS.

It's not code tags, it's quote tags. What browser are you using which the quote thing doesn't work on?

No, I know it's quote tags.  The site doesn't allow for automatically quoting from people from a previous page - you can only select text from the same page for the automated quoting to work.  afaik.
I was asking at first what the syntax was so it says for example sj says...blah blah as opposed to just the quote itself.
I did it but when I came back to add how to do it here I couldn't.  I thought I would be able to put the syntax including the quote tags etc. in a code tag and it would then show what I actually typed - i.e the square brackets etc.  but it didn't.
How can I actually type the tags without it actually 'using' them?
