What would life be like if religion never existed?

So no faith schools. No ten commandments. no reason for atheists to exist. No need to have religious ceremonies for births, marriage and deaths. No thread about the pope. Would the world really be a better place without religion?

Yes.

Everyone would value life more, they'd know they only get one. So less terrorist bombers, they know they wouldn't get their virgins when they die, or in fact end up anywhere at all.

Israel and Palestine wouldn't be fighting over control of a small area of land both of them believe holds religious significance.

Everyone would accept the scientific evidence that people are gay, transgendered or transexual due to no fault of their own, and not persecute them simply because an ancient book tells them. And stop beating up, killing or making their lives a misery.

Everyone would look at the wonderous marvel that is nature, and appreciate not only how beautiful it is, but that they can see the beauty of how it works as well, rather than simply putting it down to "god did it".

Less people would die of AIDS.

There would be less wars, less fear of Muslim countries threatening the western way of life.

People in countries all over the world would be able to take all the money spent on religion, churches, evangelical Christians, and give it to the poor.

People who previously spent so many hours a week worshipping their own particular deity could spend that time helping those less well off than themselves.

Nobody could justify anything that did no harm to society as being wrong, simply because an ancient text or their own personal belief dictated it as so.

The biggest hypocrites on the planet would be politicians, rather than them being the second biggest.

I'm sure I could think of a few more, but I reckon that'll do for now. Winking

We'd all be atheists.
But I'd be a bigger atheist than you lot cos I believe in less than you.

"Oh yes I don't"

I used to be with it, but then they changed what 'it' was.
Now, what I'm with isn't it, and what's 'it' seems weird and scary

Yes.

I consider myself an optimist, albeit an optimist with cynical tendencies and a dark side that Lucifer himself would find a little creepy. (Perhaps you’ve noticed.) You don’t normally associate cynicism with an upbeat pov. But I have exactly that combination and will defend it.

Never has so little had to be explained by me to so many so often.

Absolutely. One less excuse for horrendous acts means there's no fictional deity to hide behind when atrocities are commited. None of this 'God told me to do it' crap

However, by that logic, it would be worse, as there would be more

theft, adultery, murder etc, as no God had said shouldn't do those things.

I'm not convinced.  People seem to be judging events today in religious context without considering the past and the origin of where the combined belief systems of each religion comes from.  I'd argue that a lot of things actually came from social and cultural beliefs and just got absorbed into religion to make it easier to sell as a concept across whatever society existed at that time.

Take sacrifices to the Gods for example.  I'm wondering whether during a drought way back in history someone killed someone else and when caught span a tale about having to do it to end the drought, it rains the following day and behold - it's a miracle.  It doesn't take much...

It's just general ignorance of things we don't quite understand.

Sminty, do you think that the Bible provides a good set of morals for us to live by?

Excellent post, RJS.

Yes - We should renounce religion and consign it to history like we always keep on doing
