Iphone 3g Q

Just back from Glasgow where i get a good 3g signal (none where i live) and discovered that i couldnt open any internet pages or check my train travel app or use the sky tv or catchup tv app while in 3g mode, when i switched it off it seemed to switch to edge (i think) and then i connected np....what good is the 3g then?? majorly confused tbh

As with my broadband connection, I've had varying degrees of connection speed with 3G, edge etc. At best I've had 898 kbps, and at worst, no service at all.
