Exactly what is wrong with people? This country is going to the dogs

My wife is 7 months pregnant and last week she got on a busy train where there were no seats left and not one person gave up their seat for her and forced her to spend the 20 minute train ride standing up and clinging onto the hand rail. Thanks people.

Then this morning she pops to Morrisons while I am in work and decides to pick up some of the chocolates they have on offer (£3.99 for the 1kg(ish) tins of Celebrations, Roses, Quality Streets and Heroes). People were going frantic over them though and she managed to get the last two tins of Heroes only to have someone snatch one of the tins from her and put it in their basket!!! This is rude and a punchable offence under normal circumstances but when your victim is clearly pregnant and struggling to carry her shopping you deserve to have someone sweep your legs from under you and cr@p on your head. It's not even like this was some chav, it was a middle aged woman! I sincerly hope she reads this (although I would expect better from people on this forum) and that the chocolates are poisoned in some way you low-life scum.

Glad I got that off my chest. It was either post here or go out on some sort of vigilante style trip around the town but its far too cold and windy today

The more important thing is, is she alright?

Yes she is fine thanks. Your right, that is the most important thing but stuff like that really winds me up even when its not a family member thats the victim.

The bigger the group of people who witness something, whether it's a pregnant woman left to stand or someone being intimidated/attacked, it becomes less likely that someone will help: the Bystander Effect. Everyone expects someone else to do it (look up the murder of Kitty Genovese for how bad this can get).

The way around it is to ask one particular person to help. If she didn't ask someone to give up their seat then it's easy for people to assume she felt she was OK standing. Sad That's not to say she should *have* to ask. Sad

Nah the conductor was fine with it. Let her stand seemed to be the opinion of all concerned.

I may give Morrisons a little email though and see what their thoughts are Winking

Did she ask some-one to give up there seat?

At work a while ago a girl was annoyed that some-one had made a comment about her bump, because she's not pregnant, she just has a belly on her.

I've sat in the seats "reserved " for old/disabled ppl etc, ready to give it up if some one needs it, but if you engrossed in a book or whatever how do you know?

Now the shop thing is clearly inexcusable.

In all fairness she did not ask anyone to give their seat up no but thats not really her style anyway. In all fairness though it is possible to give up your seat for someone without pointing at her and shouting "your pregnant luv". You could just be a polite person doing their bit without causing any offence to anyone

Competent

regarding the train seat thing, I was on a train awhile back when a heavily pregnant woman and her other half boarded the train. She stood with the OT. i then asked if she wanted my seat, she refused, i asked if she was sure and she said she was. After a couple of minutes i got up and almost forced her to sit because i thought i couldn't just sit with her standing. She did sit but she, i think, didn't want "any bother".
