Hello,

I am going to cancel my subsciption with Sky and move back to Virgin...mainly for the better internet connection.

I see the 50mb connection has dropped, can any you people who have it tell me if you are getting the full speed.....i don't want to get it and its not much better than 20mb.

Thanks for any replies!

If you move to o2 on average what you get on sky will increase by around 25%, Im switching today just waiting for the line to be swapped at the exchange.

Mostly Harmless

A few guys at work have the Virgin 50mb and they seem to be getting no slower than 45 at any given time and they are mostly touching the 50mb.

Me, I'll second Stu regarding the o2 thing - I've just gone with them for £9.70 a month for 'up to 20mb' and I'm getting an average of 18 - well chuffed Grinning

Why is this? I'm on Sky and get around 10mb synch on the up to 16 package. Are you saying the O2 stuff has a better set up?

I get just over 7 on Sky at home and around 13 here at work. Both are limited by distance from the exchange, I never see any contention issues from Sky. I would be extremely surprised if an O2 connection was any faster as it is using the same technology down the same bits of wire. Virgin can offer higher speed as they are using co-ax rather than ADSL2+ over PSTN lines.

depends on quite a few variables, firstly, the line integrity between the exchange & your house (the providers responsibility) after that, it gets more complicated, the quality of the connection/wiring varies wildly house to house, for instance, in the set up info you get, it will tell you to plug the router into the Master socket, & put micro filters on all the extentions running from it (extentions classed as all other sockets wired after the master, these can be wall sockets wired through the wall or actual extention sockets) but even with the micro filters you can get problems with interference, for instance, if i connect the sky box to the phone line, my 02 connection instantly drops by about 25%, cordless phones can also cause similar interference tho this seems to vary wildly brand to brand, one of mine (a bt solo) makes the connection randomly drop, but the cheapo aldi specials we got made difference at all Confused

tho, these are only my personal experiences, & it could just be screwy wiring in the house, but i thought it was worth mentioning :@)

Its the manner in which O2 deal with the overheads and line attn. When I was on sky I synch'd at max of 5mb, I swapped today and am currently synch'd at 6.7 with 1.1mb up

Thats a huge jump considering its just an ISP change over.

O2 defo has a much better setup allround.
