If he's still frequenting these forums, I'd like to thanks Gareth for his film score recommendations. About 2 years ago (yes, that long ago!!) I was in the midst of working on a personal project, and asked in this very forum for advice regarding an appropriate soundtrack to use for my 3D animation. Gareth emailed me with a variety of appropriate soundtracks.
Well, after I abandoned the project for a considerable time, it's finally finished, and I went with one of Gareth's hotly tipped tracks - the theme to "Planet Of The Apes" as my backing music. You can see my final animation here if you're interested: The VOID 3D Animation

Well, it just demonstrates how important music is to what we are watching. As soon as you add a fitting soundtrack, everything just comes alive.
Thanks again ![]()

Danny Whoman? Nah, I reckon he had very little to do with it.![]()

Very impressive Jamie! Well done.
If you don't mind me asking, how long did it take you to produce it? Also, what software was involved?
I'm just curious, no intention of doing something like that myself (I don't have the talent) ![]()

Cheers Miles,
That's a very tricky one to answer. The simple answer is "far too long" (hence why I won't be doing lengthy animations again). I originally started this about 2 years ago. The space ship was a design that I wanted to turn into 3D. The only problem was I didn't know how to do anything in 3D. So I started to teach myself, and this was the first model I ever made. I then wanted to create a short animation of it, to show it from different sides (a rotation fly by or something). So I decided to design an environment around it as well, and then thought it would be cool to add more details and start animating it a bit more. And it just grew and grew from that.
It was all done in my spare time, and overall took many months on-and-off. I abandoned it a few of months after starting, and then picked it up a couple of months ago to finish it off once again. In between this, I worked on another 3D project - creating a 3D concept car ( www.cobravenom.co.uk which was published in Top Gear (and others), and then I worked on designing a concept for the new London Bus (which I came second in, winning £10,000 - beaten by Aston Martin).
So I decided a few months ago to take on this sci-fi project again and finish it off once and for all. You can actually see where I picked it up from - the part in the animation where the space ship is about to pop out of the top of the air lock - the shot of looking up at the planet, and everything after that is all the new stuff, done this year.
But even once the 3D work is done, I had the computer screens showing the spaceship graphics to design and animate, editing, retouching, titles, effects, sound effects, blah blah. All is very time consuming, especially when you are doing everything on your own, and in your spare time. And it's much, much more time consuming when you are still learning - I was using this as a learning exercise.
The process was something like this:
Design (quite quick)
Model, texture and lighting (very time consuming, as there was a lot to do)
Create 2D graphics animations (quite quick)
Animate (ridiculously time consuming)
Render (painfully time consuming)
Edit final scenes (moderate)
Touchup/effects to the final edit (reasonable)
Create 2D credits, graphics etc (bit slow, as each one is individually animated)
Sound mix (moderate)
Final tweaks, etc
And there's lots of unused footage, setups, etc inbetween all of this, that will never see the light of day.
I think I'll just stick to designing and doing much simpler animation in the future. This project was exhausting!

Impressive would be an insult ![]()
Does this mean the film is never gonna see reality either?
or was it a trailer intended for someone else?
And the Cobra is something else, tbh can't believe that no one has even stepped up to try and build even a concept or mock up of it (and the Top Gear page final comment is a belter
)
You have incredible talent mate, you should continue to go for the exhausting ones and I think we would be seeing your name in the proverbial lights in the future.
BTW, is there anywhere we can see the bus online? I know someone who is a right sad git into buses and would probably love that
