Would You Want A Plate Of GM Chips?

Environment Minister Phil Woolas (who he?) has challenged Prince Charles to put his money where his mouth is and prove his claim that GM crops could be disastrous for planet Earth.

Where do you stand on this issue?

While I think the whole idea of GM crops is laudable, I personally think the world should proceed with caution. We just don't know if GM crops are safe out "in the wild". Politicians (lobbied strongly by the GM industry which has billions both invested and ready to throw around to support its position) are making pro noises, but there has been so much negative talk about GM in the past, one wonders why so much is being made of the Prince of Wales' comments.

I've noticed there's little in the media in support of his position, and I wonder if this isn't the latest round of media Charles-bashing in the hope of getting rid of the Monarchy.

And before the rampant republicans start saying "what a good idea", please remember that we need a head-of-state for meeting and greeting other heads-of-state. If we don't have "royalty" to do the job, it means we have to elect somebody for the post, and that in turn means somebody like Ken Livingstone or Boris Johnson, or Tony Blair or David Cameron campaigning for what would be a hugely well-paid job with a palace of some description to live in. Now, I'm sure all of the aforementioned would take on the role of head-of-state for the good of the country, but I can't help thinking what a position of power and potential for enormous corruption there would be in having a President of the United Kingdom. I mean, would the position carry the power to start a war with anybody? Winking

Hang on, surely if Woolas is wanting Prince Charles to prove that GM food is dangerous, all Woolas has to do is eat some to prove it isn't - or is that too simple?

Well Strawberries & Tomatoes ain't. Prior to the 80s I could always have a punnet of Strawberries & they were ALWAYS sweet & tasty. Nowadays most are not edible. The same for tomatoes, I'd buy them by the bag & eat them like Strawberries. Tomatoes were so sweet & tasty then, but not now.

No. The Supermarkets and, by implication consumers, have encouraged the cutivation of varieties which are disease resistant, uniform in appearance, and storage tolerant. The concepts of good flavour and texture have been thrown out the window.

Support your local greengrocer, if you are lucky you may get the rich flavours that the supermarkets neglect.

I also loathe the fact that so much supermarket fruit is harvested unripe. Peaches used to be a seasonal treat full of juice, taste and with a heavenly aroma. Now we can get them 12 months of the year but the are sold as rocks which never ripen satisfactorily, and once ripe they turn to mush in 24 hours.
