Can a company do this in regard to an advertised job???

So, my girlfriend sent off her CV to a company that had advertised a position with a closing date for applications of last Friday (25th). She sent the CV on Tuesday last week 1st class so it would be there Weds or thursday at the latest.

A letter from said company arrived yesterday (dated 25th) saying 'thanks for your application, you've been unsuccessful on this occasion and the position is now filled.

Now, if the closing date for applications was the 25th, how on earth have they collated CV's, contacted and interviewed potential candidates, offered the job and had it accepted in less than a day?

I guess they already had someone internally for the job and my girlfriend is not that bothered about not getting it, what she is annoyed about is the time she wasted updating her CV and compiling the covering letter.

If a closing date is advertised, surely the company has an obligation to stick to that date?

Any advice would be appreciated.

As u said they had someone in mind and prob company rules stated they had to advertise for certain time, as soon as time was up they filled the position, happens all the time and no way to prove otherwise i dont think

It could be that having read her CV they realised that she was not suitable for the post and would not be going on the shortlist for interview, so got back to her as soon as possible.

Better that than not hearing anything at all.

Mostly Harmless

Sounds unprofessional of the company. Not worth going on a crusade about it. Just tell ten of your friends about this and the company will lose out in the business and reputation stakes.

Open the door for Mr Muckle!

Lots of companies have an advertised period but if they find a suitable person before then they just fill the role. This tends to happen more with temp jobs they normally want as much time as possible to train the replacement before the person leaves for whatever reason.

Also I think by law they have to advertise jobs externally they may just not to fill it externally though.

Anyway tell you gf its good to have her CV updated and practice in writing good cover letters never really hurts either.

In my experience she was lucky to get a reply stating she had not got the job.

Well she rang them today and apparently the advert ran for 2 weeks, they had loads of applicants and there were 2 very strong candidates from the 1st weeks advert. The MD wanted to get them in for an interview straight away and appointed one from that interview.......thats the story anyway!

Competent

It is an acceptable and legal way to 'Paper sift' by just making a random selection and binning them (I know this from experience in carrying them out!...not that I've ever done it...but it is legal to do so)
