I saw him live a few years ago at a "Comedy" festival - it was a friend's stag weekend.
He was an offensive, xenophobic, mysogynistic twat. I don't have any sympathy for him at all.

Are you ok with Government sponsored comedians, where their joke list is vetted prior to performance?
His jokes were not to everyones taste (although his popularity/career lasted many, many years) but the alternative is one dimensional crappy comedians with strict, foreigner-friendly subject matter. He has been alienated because he told jokes about foreign people, and that in principle is wrong, you can't tell people what they are and are not allowed to laugh at.
His alleged wife beating is abhorrent.
