Debiting your Credit Card before dispatching your order??????
posted by Normann on Wednesday, 30th May 2001, 12:09

Mostly Harmless

I'm sure that one of you clever guys out there mentioned some time ago, that it was illegal to debit your c.c. before the goods were dispatched.

Is this true?

Anyone know which law?

Preferably chapter & verse, so that I can discuss the matter with an over-zealous supplier who has debited my c.c. and advised that the goods should be dispatched within 21 days!!!!!

Thanks - Normann

Normann, Thats a tricky one. I am sure that by confirming the order you are entering into a legal contract and therefore they are O.K. to debit your card, but obviously oblidged to send you the goods you ordered within fair amount of time (This should be stated when you order).

This happens regularly to me and my goods usually turn up within the next few days, from there point of view there gonna want there money before they send you in most cases!!!!.... I'm sure there's nothing to worry about.

Have a look at this site (Office of Fair Trading) it tells you a bit about shopping on the internet and Distance Selling Regulations.

Competent

I pretty sure the regulations state that mail order deliveries must be fulfilled within max 28 days. This is why you often see "allow 28 days for delivery". I think most decent mail order companies don't deduct money until goods ship. Avoid those that do is the simple answer.

Check out their terms and conditions. If it states (as ours does) you will not be billed untill despatch (or day of). Therfore you have them by the short and curleys. Complain to your Credit/Debit card provider for none delivery of goods and/or contact trading standards.
