Mostly Harmless

Have I missed a post on this? I searched back but couldn't find one. Surprised no one's mentioned it.

Anyway, is anyone else fed up hearing about this? What does everyone think?

IMO, he shouldn't apologise, why should he, it wasn't racist. The fact that the reporter happened to be Jewish should have nothing to do with it - but because KL mentioned Nazi's, he's a huge anti-semite.

Now, Tony Blairs wading in saying he should apologise. What's the point - Ken Livingstone has said he's not sorry, and if he stood up and apologised he'd be lying. So why is everyone banging on about him saying sorry, when it would be a pointless, empty gesture?

end of rant.

The Evening Standard, and Associated Newspapers (who own The Standard & Daily Mail/Mail On Sunday) in general, have had it in for Ken Livingstone for literally decades. That's why this has become such a big deal.

He wasn't being anti-semitic and I admire him for standing up to scum-sucking parasite journalists.

As I heard it Ken had a go at a reporter who door stoped him after a party. The reporter said I am just doing my job. Ken replied that he was like a concentration camp guard. Implying that the reporter had a choice, like a camp guard, so it was no excuse to say you are just doing your job. Nothing to do with the reporter being jewish. Being a reporter though it was very easy to make the story that Ken was anti jew.

I have no opinion on this or ken btw.

All the best,

The 42%er.

It's not easy being different. It's not easy being cool....but somehow I manage....

I thought the problem was that Ken had made light of the nazi/concentration camp thing... its not really something in a public forum should make glib comments about.

The recording of the incident I heard went as follows: Ken said what 42%er said he did, the reporter said "I'm Jewish and I find that quite offensive actually". Then instead of saying "Well sorry about the guard comment, but you're still working for a scummy paper and being annoying, get the hell out of my face." (rephrasing his point) and that being the end of it - he *carried on* with the guard comments after he knew the guy was Jewish. That's the part that wasn't on, IMHO.

He'd lost his argument by Godwin's Law anyway! Grinning

Its one of those off the cuff things that you shouldnt have said but did and its been blown out of all proportion (very easily. he should have known better).

To be honest, if he was going to apologise for anything it should be for being a smug, champagne socialist ball licker who should have maintained his dignity and not rejoined the labour party.

But what do i know.........

The thing that really gets me is The Standard's rank hypocrisy. They've been running a smear campaign against KL for many, many years now. They've run multiple front-page stories accusing Livingstone of (amongst other things) common assault and wife beating. Both these accusations have proved to be completely baseless, but so far an apology, or even a retraction, from The Standard has not been forthcoming.

Given Rothermere's political and financial links with the Conservative party, it's difficult to see this campaign by The Standard as anything other than politically motivated.

I personally have mixed feelings about Ken. I didn't vote for him as mayor, but appreciate that he does some good work in that position. My main beef is with pondlife, two-faced journalists and media barons.

Yes! I'm completely sick of the London-centric media going on about this, as though the story was somehow of national significance.

I mean, this bloke is the mayor of London, and the gist of the "story" is that he said something rude to a reporter from that city's local newspaper. Wow, that's really going to interest someone living in Manchester or Aberdeen. Confused
