Second car purchase advice needed!!

All,

Right, me and the missus have decided it's time for a second motor for her as she has now dropped some hours at work and will devote more time to looking after the boys, (good reason behind this - but far too personal and too long to go into here!!).

So, she's looking for a nice sensible motor, (bear in mind she's female tho!! Looks are important no matter how much you drive down the importance of practicality over aesthetics!!), around £3000 that's easy on fuel, fits into lower tax bracket, and can comfortably fit her and two kids, (aged 8 and 4).

Important points;

She's 6ft tall, so a Pug 106 is way too small.
She does do a lot of M Way driving so a decent, though not mega power engine is needed
Diesel a very good consideration
Power Steering due to some health reasons is vital
Big enough boot a bonus!

Ideas and advice please!!

Nice one

Ok, this is going to do nothing more, I fear, than start a "what car is cool" thread.....

But, saying that (and I really hope it doesn't!), for that kind of money you could pick up a nice - albeit a few years old - corsa or Peug 206.
There will be people who slate these but, as a man who is married to a "lady" driver, who drives an MRII Roadster as she earns a lot more than me, all I can say is that these are the two cars she thinks have a nice lady look.........and neither of them are bad cars either - you could even enjoy ragging the 206 (doubtful anyone would enjoy trying to thrash a Corsa!) yourself! Hi.

Just changed my Beemer compact for a Golf Tdi, coz we needed extra doors for little people, while it is a newer one the diesel engines are bullet proof if looked after so i am sure there are older ones in your bracket in Autotrader.

You can't fault the krouts when it comes to cars......!

I'm with rob - a 206 is ideal. I'm 6'4" and can just about get in one, so they are not too small. Also, the Peugeot diesels are a delight to drive. You should be able to get a decent one for your budget too.

I'm currently selling a high spec astra on ebay on behalf of a friend and was suprised by what a nice car the newer astras are. Would fit all the requirements except maybe the street cred. Also, worth looking on ebay for what ever car you go for, some very decent prices.

Oh, and I drive a three year old diesel clio which is quite a stylish little car, has cheap insurance, low tax band and fantastic fuel consumption. Well worth a look and about the right price range as well.

Try here: http://www.carselect.lloydstsb.com/goDirect.asp?page=goFindPrivateCar

Its part of LTSB. All the cars are UK.

Wife got a new Corsa SXI from them last year for £6.4k from £10k list! Notso good now but their price is still cheaper than the local garages 1 year old model! A Ford Ka is £5K, 20% cheaper than a Fordgarage.

BTW you do not have to use their finance. A loan may be better value for you, it was for us.

All in all, excellent service and the Corsa is bigger in side than my mates mk2 Golf.

Golf 1.4 is ideal. I bought one for my son and use it when ever I can. Very roomy. Hight not a problem (I am 6ft tall). Boot reasonable.
