FW 3.42 released today to fix "minor security issue".

Hopefully this'll be the end of it but I doubt it somehow...

Could someone please

I doubt it too but once again, those who haven't modified anything get screwed with a new firmware that they either install or get no online play Sad

You can hack your PS3 from phones to Texas calculators lol.
Winking
(jimbo, sorry, when I said 'OK', I meant it won't be long and they're being worked on - whereas it doesn't look likely that it will work on just a USB stick..)
Custom firmware, stopping PSN seeing your firmware version etc. all not too far off I think.
You can even play ANY PS3 game on your PSP now via 'remote play'.  This is massive and Sony have lost already.  imho..

Ste (with a 3.41 PS3..)

Just have to look at the Wii softmods and how Nintendo have been completely unable to close that loophole.

forgive my noobiness in this area Winking....  but how does this work ?  for instance,  playing MW2 on psp ?  does the remote play send the video to the psp, while the ps3 still does all the grunt work, in effect using the psp as a remote screen & controller ?

Just have to look at the Wii softmods and how Nintendo have been completely unable to close that loophole.

never could get into the Wii Sad  but if there anyway to use it as a proper media server, i could see me using it daily Happy

The PS3 is a totally different scenario from the Wii though.
These modifications are sending the PS3 into something called Debug mode (or similar) and therefore enabling features previously unavailable except to Sony test centres.

The Remote Play thing is only open to those who mod their PS3 in the first place and then edit a file within the game to turn it on.
Now, there's no way in hell I'm gonna defend Sony so don't take it as that and I think it's shocking that a simple software switch is the on/off on ALL games (apparently) to make them work with remote play, but it's still technically hacking the software to enable it.

Loads of different ports and boards appearing now, my PS3 is still on 3.41 too but I sat on 3.15 for ages as you know.
Found somewhere selling a PIC type board quite cheap but I just dunno....

Custom FW would be nice but I wouldn't hold my breath for now peeps.
Especially as it took literally 2 days for Phony to release 3.42 which apparently removes the debug mode rendering the dongle useless and removing the mode from new units being manufactured.

Still, we can but hope Grinning

Why does that make it a totally different scenario? The method for bypassing the copy protection may be different, but the results are ultimately the same, and not easily preventable with firmware updates.

Once you find a way in to these units, and understand how they work at low levels, much like the iPhone someone will always find a way round your patches. The hardware stays the same.

The same as Nintendo changed firmware and DVD drives too?

Exactly.  Of course Sony will keep making updates but the horse has well and truly bolted.

The difference is Nintendo have been very weak at patching the exploits used, and that more exploits surfaced to allow the hackers to continue with their previous shenanigans.
Sony are patching on a much heavier basis.

3.15: updated the system.
Rumours abounded about an exploit, George Hotz released a (useless) "hack" to the community, about a week later 3.21 was released and the option to "install Other OS" is gone.
Apparently this was needed to use this exploit so rather than try to patch around it (like Ninty), Sony just said "bollox to it" and chopped it right out.
Never mind the wrath of those who actually used Linux, never mind those who might have wanted to, it's gone, short n simple.

Next, it appears that a test dongle was left in a returned unit.
Someone sniffed it, grabbed the code and wrote around it to achieve the same objective.
Out comes the "PSJailbreak" and the community goes into a fervour.
Hackers and cloners get hold of the internal software of this device and decide to rip it off, community gets even more hyped up.
Clones start appearing (everything from usb development boards to calculators n mobile phones), we all think this horse has bolted and we're home almost free...
Sony wallop the 3 big boys of Aussie modding, resulting in pre orders being refunded, the item removed from their stock lists and a court granting an injunction in Sony's favour.
Sony go after the US based guys.
Then they start in Europe.

Within a couple of days, 3.42 is released and the dongles don't work.
Those "in the know" don't update their systems and use a workaround for PSN.
Two days later the PSN workaround is blocked, last time by blocking the DNS used, this time by REMOVING the exploit it used.

Ninty did a half hearted attempt at closing down the Wii when it got hacked. They didn't do very well and the lads ripped the proverbial scheitte out of it.

Sony on the other hand went in like a starving bulldog, ripped the bollox out of the distribution network, shut down the method(s) used to get in there and actively pursued all the other avenues.

I hope to gawd I'm wrong and that someone does find a way to patch the firmware cos I would like to get my Other OS option back.
I'd also like a try-before-you-buy scenario to prevent me wasting money on things like Bionic Commando which I loved on the Sega and can't f**kin stand on the PS3.

Time will tell but I really aint holding out much hope from what I read in the "community" areas.
Currently seems the only way to "enjoy" all the features of the PS3 is to keep a unit on 3.41 and get a new unit for online play.

[edit] oh, and btw, meant to say, it appears the PSP port is dead and almost buried Sad (that was the one I was hoping for cos I don't use my PSP ) [/endedit]
