Guess I'll skip this generation now then. Apart from tablet, Wii U is going to have to do some other pretty special and unique stuff to stay interesting/popular, unless again they try to be the console ppl own as well.

can't see it happening in 2012.

maybe we'll see the initial vapourware (as usual) during one of the many
shows that kick off from april.

2013 would be my guess.

It wouldn't surprise me if both Sony and MS have a running upgrade for their respective machines, casually bumping up the specs as the time passes. Just waiting to see when the other decides that the current generation is over.

I can't see Sony going the same route as the PS3 again, a funky fancy complicated CPU (or other proprietry hardware) which doesn't get used properly because we live in an age of big franchises that are ported to all machines, on an overpriced console.

They are also both probably going to look and see how the Wii-U does.

the wii u will apparently be a bit more powerful than the PS3 and 360.
it also now allows for the use of 2 tablet controllers.

tbh, i'd personally be happy with a console that could run 1080p @ 60fps
without slowdown.

Microsoft Source Claims Xbox 720 Arriving in 2013http://www.tomsguide.com/us/Microsoft-Xbox-Kinect-Gaming-Console-Windows-8,news-13537.html

Quote:
A source within the Xbox team confirms that the next Xbox console is scheduled for a late 2013 release.

For a while we've seen speculation and insider-based rumors that point to a June 2013 reveal of the next-generation, Windows 8-based Xbox console, the Xbox Next, Xbox Loop or Xbox 720, whatever it's called. It will officially come out of the closet during E3 2013 and then likely ship towards the end of the year. It will also feature an OS based on Windows 8, essentially nuking any rumor claiming the console will be available before September of 2012.

I wonder if that means we'll start getting the fanboy mockups soon of what they'll look like, and more articles about what the consoles will do after a conversation with some-one in the pub who is "in the know" Winking

I don't like that. Forcing you to buy games online and download them prevents you from selling them when you've finished them.

the games industry never liked us doing that, and this is their way of thrusting two fingers up in our faces. Ultimately it'll be the end of second hand retailers like CEX...

You say that, but actually look at Steam as a good example, it lets you sell some games to other people at any price you both agree to. This means that publishers can actually get a cut of the second hand sale transaction, something they couldn't really do before.

You are right about it being the beginning of the end of second hand games retailers though.
