I have both & to be honest Im glad I do as they are both quite different, but to answer your question, my opinion is as follows :-

Xbox Pros :-
Hard Drive thus no need for a memory card
4 game pad ports thus no need for adaptor for multiplayer games
Better graphics with fast loading times
Some games on multi-consoles will have more levels & characters than other consoles like Spiderman
Best console for sports & 1st/3rd person shoot em ups
Halo - possible the best console game to date available now
Has Splinter Cell (Xbox Exclusive Title) coming out this month - will be the new best game available accross all consoles - trust me :0)
5.1 surround sound when connected to Amp via optical cable

Cons:-
Need to buy special remote control to enable DVD playback
Release dates on multi-console games longer by at least a week
Games more expensive that for other consoles
Amount of games currently available although more & more are eventually getting to the shops
A bit noisey

PS2 Pros :-
Faster & cheaper release dates of games
Ability to use game pad for DVD playback
100's of games available & plenty of 2nd hand titles to pick up at half price
Still has sole rights to Tomb Raider - clearly an eagerly awaited title although not due out til Feb 2003
Possible further price reduction imminent

Cons :-
Need a memory card to save progress - a real pain in the ....
Need to buy adaptor for 3 or more people to play multi-player games
Still a bit noisey
Loading can be slow on large games
Still only Pro-Logic sound available when connected to Amp via optic cable

My conclusion is that if you like sports & shoot em ups then get an Xbox but if you like platform games etc.. get a PS2

Why not buy one from either Argos or Game & if you dont like it take it back for a FULL refund (16 days at argos & 10 days at game)
NOTE: If you do do this, GET A REFUND - DO NOT EXCHANGE when you get a refund, then buy th other machine as if you exchange then prefer the 1st option, it makes life a bit difficult - trust me :0)

Either way im sure you'll be happy

I'm trying to make the same decision, but the person above didn't mention the GAMECUBE, where would that fit in amongst the reckoning. I myself like sports games (so if the above is right then I should get the X-Box) and am not too interested in DVD as i've already got a good player.

What are the best deals knocking around at the moment for X-box, gamecube, PS2?

This question was also asked in the consoles forum recently. I'll repeat what I said then... everyone must have Grand Theft Auto: Vice City. Therefore, get a PS2!

I left out GameCube as I am 32, not 12. As far as I can see & comments from people I know, the GameCube is better for the younger generation who like mice rolling around in balls or a mad moustached painter running around sucking up ghosts etc... not my cup of coffee (dont like tea either lol)

Ive got both a PS2 and Cube, the XBox is cr@p else I'd have one!!

Rubbish is the Cube all about mad moustached painters!!! ho ho ho!!! Theres none of them in Resident Evil the last time I checked!!!!

The best sports game is on the PS2, ProEvolutionSoccer2.

I've got an Xbox and PS2.

The Xbox, as previously stated is technically superior, but suffers from a lack of good games and higher prices.

The PS2 has plenty of software, although it too has it's fair share of rubbish. Technically, aside from a handful of titles (GT3, Burnout 2 and a few others), the graphics on the PS2 are getting dated compared to the Xbox. Similarly, the Xbox has Dolby Digital 5.1 sound for all games, which is generally excellent.

It actually comes down to what you want to play. As I said, I've got both, I use my Xbox MUCH more than my PS2. Yeah, the PS2 has Vice City, but it's an old game rehashed with last generation graphics imho.

The Xbox's game lineup is increasing all the time, and sales are now starting to pick up, the console has finally taken 2nd place from the Gamecube in the Uk.

I'm lucky, I've got both, so know the merits of each one, but if I had to get rid of one, the PS2 would go without hesitation.

If you dont want to play DVDs or have your machine chipped to play backups the GameCube is the machine to own.....

Pros...

Most games are displayed in Progressive Scan

Apart from ported games all are original and totally fresh in gameplay

Resident Evil Series is exclusive, also Mario, Zelda, Metroid....

I have'nt seen a game that could compare to StarFox adventures in terms of quality of graphics and gameplay on the PS2 or X Box.

The Wavebird wireless controller is the best thing to come out in years...totally responsive and the most comfortable controller you could ask for.

Dolby Pro Logic 2 on most games.

Cons.....

Ported games look crap!

I own all consoles and Import regularly and have so for years and feel the GC is the most refreshing console to come out in in a long time.

The PS2 is a good machine and has loads of RPGs which i could'nt do without...Especially Suikoden III
and also the Winning Eleven Series.

The X-Box has most of the PS2 games ported to it with better graphics and a few Microsoft Exclusives...Halo, Maximum Chase and a Dreamcast Port of Shenmue 2 which is worth owning an X Box for if you dont own a Dreamcast.

If i had to choose ....i would pick the GC out of all the new Consoles.
