Technically you do ![]()
You're going from the DVD format (MPEG2) to an AVI container (presumably using either a DivX or Xvid video codec and an MP3/AC3 audio codec). So that's re-encoding ![]()

I never said you did.
The program I recommended can be used for re-encoding, but as I said, it can rip from disc to loads of different formats including AVI, Divx, MP4 & many others.
And its free.

Sorry my bad, that does look just what I need, cheers Pat!
(Though for some reason whenever I try to start an encode with DivX it just closes the app
)

I have only only tried to rip a Divx file once & it worked okay then.
Maybe you need to update your codec?
You could try installing K-Lite Mega Codec Pack
RJS.
I just updated my XMedia Recode to the latest upload, 2.2.6.3, tried to rip a disc to Divx & it crashed on me too.
I uninstalled the new version, went back to the previous which is 2.2.5.8 & that works fine.
So, remove the latest, install 2.2.5.8 & it should work ok.
2.2.5.8 is on the download page of XMedia Recode here.
Sorry about that.
Ooh cheers Pat! (no need to apologise!)
This is a fantastic util tho, cheers for the recommendation. I even used it the other day to quickly encode a fraps capture of Portal for bryanc.
