I know handbrake will go to MKV, which is fine for my iPhone, but if I want to rip episodes of shows to AVI so I can store them on a USB stick what is the easiest freeware for doing it atm?
Really want to just stick in the DVD, select the episodes and have it rip each one to a separate file.
TIA!

Why AVI specifically Rob?
I use Handbrake for ripping to MP4 files (for the iPhone and for the PS3).
For the iphone I stick to the MPEG4 codec (for speed), but for the PS3 I use x264 (generally better quality, but takes a lot longer to encode).
Has to be AVI because various devices that playback from USB don't support MP4 or MKV. ![]()
Don't worry smurfette, I'll be back soon on another account to promote some crappy pay for product!

Haven't done any Xvid/DivX conversions for a while. Last time I did it was when Handbrake still supported it. So unfortunately I can't recommend anything for that.
Some of the others on here raved about "Super" though.

Yes I've used Super before, but it will only convert the VOB files with no concept of titles or episodes. ![]()

I used Handbrake to stick a DVD movie on my iPod.

XMedia Recode is the program I use to convert to other formats after using Handbrake to rip.
It can also rip from disc, but I've not used it for that.
One thing, the default is German but the last few updates have all installed in English when English is selected on install (it used to install in German whatever)
They also have a portable version to use from a USB but I haven't tried that, I don't really see the point. (unless using a work's PC maybe...?)
worth a look

I don't want to re-encode
I guess there isn't an easy option to go straight to AVI that is free.

Have you tried SimpleDivX? I used it a while ago and you can encode direct from the disc providing you have a program that decrypts on the fly (if not you have to rip first).
