Region B/2 works here in the UK and in New Zealand, so you should be fine.

But on a more direct-to-the-player-in-question reply, can't you just ask your friend to look in the instruction manual or the back plate of the machine for the BD area code letter.....?

Yes it will, NZ is region B along with OZ, pretty much all of Europe, Africa and Asia

Also depending on the studio the disk could very well be region free anyhow, All titles from Universal are region free, or at least Im yet to encounter a region locked one....

Cool, no probs, Bryan.

Formats have always confused us - first we had to understand whether a country used PAL, NTSC or SECAM, not to mention whether they were using VHS or Betamax, then we had 6 numbered regions to identify and now we have these damn letters! lol

For what it's worth, I have several friends who don't even realise they have Blu-Ray players under their TV sets, as their husbands/partners installed the box and told them it was a DVD player so as not to confuse them! I am repeatedly explaining the difference and giving demonstrations to prove the quality is better. It has gone straight over their heads...
