Did anyone see the re-release of The Thing at the cinema?

Just saw John Carpenter's The Thing, and it was excellent seeing it on the big screen, the digital file of the film was amazing, the special effects still stands compared to the CGI of today as well as jaw dropping, you can see every detail of Bottin's effects.

If The Thing on Blu Ray is anything like what I saw at the cinema, then I may seriously consider buying one.

I wanted to go today but never managed to get around to it (was only on today aswell).

I've seen the Blu Ray and it is one of the best I've seen. Definately a showstopper for the system.

It was probably 2k projection, so yes the blu ray will be comparable I'm sure considering you'll be watching it on a smaller screen at home.

I missed this as I've had to work tonight, but had thought about it....

They're showing The Godfather in digital next Monday, so am looking forward to seeing that.

I'm hoping they'll show part 2 soon, then I've seen all three on the big screen. I remember seeing The Godfather part III on my birthday, when it was first released.

I saw Scarface a couple of weeks back, which also excellent, but it did go really grainy at a particular scene, where Tony is looking out the window, and the air ship passes by saying 'The World is Yours'.

Blues brothers, the thing, the godfather, scarface..all re releases Id love to see at the cinema having missed out first time around, but I dont have the spare cash at the mo to go to the cinema although I might make the effort to go as Ive never seen the godfather at all (I know theres me and maybe 4 other people in the world yet to see it lol)

Is there any particular reason all these films are being re released? have I missed an anniversary or something or is it just another attempt to get bums on seats in the cinemas?

Well that at least explains why Bristol didn't get any of them. I never knew they were digital. The Thing on BD is actually inferior to the HD DVD in terms of image quality. In performing the usual scratch removal and stuff they've filtered it too much and removed a lot of fine detail. It still looks loads better than the DVD and has an uncompressed audio track, so it's not all bad. Universal loves the DNR these days.

I saw The Thing on Tuesday and Scarface a few weeks back. I'm definitely going to see the other three (Spartacus, Animal House and The Blues Brothers) but will make a special effort for The Godfather.

The Thing looks excellent on BD though I haven't seen the HD-DVD as a point of comparison and at the cinema it was superb. I was sitting right at the front (lousy small screen with the wheelchair bay just over 2m from the screen) but was completely wowed. I think that they did go a little overboard with the DNR but the picture was fantastically clear and it's just great to see these films on the big screen. I don't know why Universal have done this and why these five films but, as I said here, I'm all for classic films being re-released and just wish that they would be given more publicity and longer runs.

Worthwhile looking at this thread for examples of what Universal are now doing to their BD releases. The shot of MacReady holding the bottle is a good one, because you can that there's less print damage in the light areas (sky), but also less grain. His shirt and skin are also much softer on the BD release.

I saw Alien when it was re-released at the cinema a couple of years ago. Very cool.

Apparently, due to popular demand, certain Cineworld cinemas are showing The Thing again this Friday and Saturday. Check the drop down menu at the side to see if it's showing near you. Link.
