Yes that's right, Nicolas Cage will star in a remake of the 1992 cult Abel Ferrara classic The Bad Lieutenant.

Is it being directed by Alex Proyas though, and although I thought I, Robot was a load of s***, I do love The Crow and Dark City has some cool bits about it.

And Nic Cage, whilst s***e in everything post year 2000 was one of my fave actors of the 90s so I have optimistic hopes.

Haven't seen the original to this though so am going to add it to Lovefilm now.

Let's put it this way, the two things that made Bad Lieutenant work as a film were.........

Abel Ferrara & Harvey Keitel!

It doesn't really have a plot or script, so when you take those 2 people away you're left with........................

NOTHING!!

Remake Potential = ZERO, NIL, NADA, ZILCH, NONE WHATSOEVER!!!!!!!!!

It's a strange movie, that in the hands of another director, and actor the original would have failed, it's like making Goodfellas but without Scorsese's vision or style.

A classic example is The Shining, under Kubrick it was a tight, scary, strange, claustrophobic horror movie, with Jack Nicholson at his ultimate best.

When The Shining was remade, the mini series was long winded, and un-scary, it didn't have the subtle claustrophobic, paranoid tension between the characters and the hotel Kubrick masterfully created. Also the man who played the character Jack Torrance lacked the powerful performance Nicholson gave in the 80's classic.

The film was all about Keitel's performance and Ferrara's vision and style - with another lead and director, it won't work and it's pointless.

I didn't want to see Harvey Keitel's penis, and I certainly don't want to see Nic Cage's penis, especially as he'll probably spend 6 hours a day in the willy gym pumping the thing up before whipping it out.

Herzog is apparently directing. Klaus Kinski would've made a great bad lieutenant. But I wouldn't have wanted to see his penis either.
