Clerks 2

At the Cannes film festival, this film got an 8-minute standing ovation. I now know why. The audience was invited. Ergo, fanboys and girls, in a movie theatre with the director. However, if I was there, I would have joined in for the first minute or two. This is a nice film, but not fantastic.

It's on a par with Clerks for pace, and this is more than likely deliberate. Dante & Randall, having 'lost' the Kwik-Stop, have been working at Mooby's for a year. In that time Randall (Jeff) is exactly the same ignorant, racist, sexist moron as when we left him. Dante(Brian), is pretty much the same too. More sensitive and ambitious than Randall, but still feels like he's stuck in the same quagmire as his counterpart, well until he gets married to the Director's wife.

Jennifer Schwalbach-smith (kevin's missus) plays Emma, Dante's new fiance, who's daddy is promising them a new house and Dante a new job managing a Car Wash just as soon as they move to Florida. If only Dante didn't actually love Becky, the Mooby manager.

The viscerous social interaction with the customers is the same. The banter within the staff regarding geeky stuff is back. (Star wars Vs LotR gets arguementative) but looking back on the whole movie, there's no way whatsoever the average movie-goer would applaud the 'realisation scene' when it involved Donkey-sex.

Sorry that I didn't pop that one in a spoiler, but I thought I'd let you guys know what to expect. Assumed donkey sex.

Ok, cast list review

Brian & Jeff - I had a tear rolling down my cheek after the jail-cell scene, however, it did seem a little predictable. Their performances are as constant as they are throughout the whole series

Jay & Silent Bob. Jay is the reason this film was written. If you've read Kevin's tale about Jason's struggle with drugs, you'll understand.

Rosario Dawson. Fantastic, plays off against Brian very well

Trevor Fehrman - Plays Elias. Total geek, loves LotR and the fact there's a new Transformers movie coming out.

Affleck's in there too, but only has one line. Jason lee has five minutes, and fills it well.

As I hinted at the start, this is a movie that will appeal to a captive audience; those that are fans of the Nj Trilogy. A Kevin Smith virgin will see a complete film, but a lot of the elements will be lost on those that haven't seen Clerks 1. Thereby ensuring this one will probably break even.

I've been watching the Trainwrecks (behind the scenes shorts) and there's one which has Quentin tarantino & Robert Rodriguez having just watched an early cut of the film, and QT talks about a point in the film where it 'become a movie'. I think I know where that point is, but it's not as spectacular as the short suggested, and it's been used as a pivotal plot point in many movies before it.

In short, this movie, after the rollercoaster that was J&SBSB, is the 90-minute wait to get off the car while they fix the Roller-coaster's technical hitch. It's sweet, moving, sometimes LOL funny, but it's still playing to a very select audience.

As for the bestiality gag I mentioned that the reviewer walked out on in the other thread, I'd have to say it felt, after the jail-cell scene, totally unnecessary and tasteless, considering how long it went on for. There were so many ways Kevin could have done that differently.

6.5/10, and it breaks my heart to give it that after the triumph that was Strikes Back

Better than that for me, and I didn't have much of a problem with the "inter species erotica" as it was put. It's not *that* much more offensive than the first Clerks. Anyway, I quite enjoyed it.

The whole "racist words" bit was utterly hilarious as well as reflecting our overly PC society today. Randall's LOTR rant could have been stolen from me. There's so much to appreciate about it. As good as the original? Not quite. That shouldn't put you off watching it at all.

I've watched it a couple of times now and I'm gonna take back quite a bit of what I wrote before. With a clear head the 'inter-species' scene isn't actually that bad (while being bad, if you get me), and it's a bloody good ending to the series.

Ok, I'm just back from the UK Premiere at Edinburgh Film Festival (with Smith intro and after film Q&A) and I just loved the film and it was made extra special with Smith being there and a great audience.

I took some pictures with a brand spanking new (actually, my first) digital camera, it's a pocket Cyber-Shot (tiny) 7.2 mega-pixels, and with all my photography/film/dv experience, all the pics I took were blurred. I only got the camera today (err, yesterday I mean) so I'll forgive myself.... BECAUSE I'M GOING BACK TO SEE KEVIN SMITH TOMORROW for his Reel Life feature!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

However, here is a video clip I took with said camera... forgive the shakiness... and you'll not learn much of interest... but here it is. He talked for like 40 minutes after the film, and covered a lot of s***, and basically comes across as the most portentious filmmaker I've ever had the pleasure of listening to.

Nope, sorry, but I'm sure it will be well publicised.

Just back from his Reel Life feature, which was awesome, told some great stories (one about Hayden Christensen who sounds like a whiney bitch, and some odd stuff about Harvey Weinstein, and Michael Bay). His next film is gonna be a horror film, but he wouldn't give any more details. Overall I feel he was quite restrained compared to last night after the Clerks 2 screening with his Q&A, probably because there were lots of journalists in the room this time (another story he told gave good reason to not slag too many people while press folk are there Grinning ).

If you want to know more just ask and I'll get back to you.
