I got my copy yesterday and watched it last night. I got the general gist (I think!) that he had the choice of living his life , after cheating death, but suffering the consequences of losing his girlriend etc...or, sacrificing himself in order to let them live. Either way the world was going to end (as far as he was concerned), as prophecised by the big bunny, whichever path he took!

I've only watched it the once, but I think that you will have to watch it quite a few times to pick everything up. Hey, maybe I'll come up with a different conclusion when I watch it again!

I may have got it wrong...but like I say, I'm going to watch it again and see what other things I can work out.

I saw no point in the psycho bunny rabbit or the point in the whole story whatsoever.

I have to admit that, after all the talk/hype of said film, I was a bit disappointed. I was expecting to be 'knocked flat'...but that never happened.

I've seen worse...but I've seen better! Perhaps I may have a different opinion after a few viewings.

the extra feature of the book he reads in the film explains all. To sum up Donnie Darko was manipulated by the rabbit man to shoot him, if he did not the world would have ended. This isn't the whole idea of the film, there is so much more to it, but even the director stated that the film was made so that people would be confused and think about it way after the film ended.

I just watched it yesterday and have to say it didn't live up to expectations. Yes, I did like quite like it, but the it's all a dream type ending was unimaginative in an imaginative film, so I felt let down.

Ascomdog has got the meaning of the film spot on, however I must disagree and say that I thought it was, an excellent film that deserved a bigger budget and wider release.

You either 'get' a film or you don't, in either case viewers will enjoy or be dissappointed by the film. I suggest watching this film a couple of times (I personally thought it was better on the 2nd viewing). If you still don't 'get' it then re-sell the DVD and move on because if you have to ask for advice on how to 'get' into it, you're onto a loser.

surely there is also the suggestion made by Gretchen that Donnie Darko is a superhero name. This becomes true at the end because he saves everyone. The teacher doesn't lose her job, he saves his girlfriend, the physics teacher doesn't die, neither does Grandma death, etc. He saves all these people lives and does something extra ordinary. He is a superhero. tHats something else I got from it.

Yeah but then I was expecting him then to go back and forth in time and the psycho bunny rabbit was his guide in creating mayhem and destruction, but then that would of made sense.
