Blade 2 and Ice Age for $11.80 each
posted by derryn on Friday, 26th April 2002, 11:32

Harmless

I found a site called DVDsLand.com. They are selling DVD's before their release dates (eg. Blade 2, Ice Age, Lord of the rings etc.). Does anyone know whether these are DVD's or VCD's? The only catch is that delivery is $10.50 (no extra cost if you buy more than one DVD).

They will *not* be originals. They will be pirate, taken from either a camera pointing at the screen, or ripped from some other source - in some cases DVD quality and burnt on DVD.
There would be no extras & quality would be variable. They are often referred to as Region Zero - as no regional coding is used - beware of this on ebay etc.

Customs would confiscate if found- as they are illegal.

The giveaway is that they only accept CCNow - any reputable retailer would offer proper Credit Card support.

These discs should be avoided, but it is worth pointing out as an addendum that a disc marked region 0 is not necessarily a pirate. I recently bought a perfectly legit copy of "Hard Boiled" from Bensonsworld, and it is region 0. However, it is quite right to point out that if a dvd of a recent cinematic release is available and marked as region 0 or region free, then there is a good chance that it is dodgy.

Mostly Harmless

My uncle brought back a large number of DVDs like this. The discs look professional but the inlays provided are amusing - covered in japanese and english text which makes no sense and looks like its mixed up with many other film inlays.

As others have said, quality varies. Thirteen Ghosts was perfect, Monsters Inc. was a nasty camcorder fuzzy messed job. Jeepers Creepers had somebody sitting in a cinema eating bext to the camera.

On the good side, these discs only cost 60p each, so it was worth the risk. I'm told that sketchy people come up to your with bags full of the DVDs in cafes/restraunts in China (where he is currently working on contract).

$11 is a bit pricey for potentialy shoddy crap.

Ice Age Region 1 is available for pre order on futureent and movietyme at 16.99 and 17.99 delivered respectively. No dates though.

Incidentally a lot of education/music titles are region 0 as well as a lot of the Criterion output.

Had a butchers' at that DVDsland site, just out of curiosity. Looks well dodgy to me. It's full of links that don't work. There's no registered address for the business and no contact details.

I notice they've made a nice clickable little banner for 'The Disney Movie Store' - only it's not clickable. Just a ploy to make them look more legit. At best the site looks like it's still under construction, at worst I suspect they are gonna rip you off.

Wonder if they're mentioned in Retailer Reviews...
