Toshiba DVD Player With Divx (but no mp3?)

Father in-law is getting a new Panasonic plasma so recommended he get a new DVD with Divx playback.

Found this Toshiba for just £22.97 at Tesco!!

Thought it was a great buy for the money but found out later it does not play mp3?

I found this very strange as it plays Divx and VCD? Surely it does not save them any money by removing it?

I've tested it with my Mp3 Cd's and DVD's and it does not see the files Sad

I'm changing it with a Philips now which plays everything Happy

Harmless

I guess it's possible that they could be saving money, not in terms of the electronics, which are dirt-cheap, but the licensing costs. As I understand it, every manufacturer who makes a device that can decode MP3 has to pay a licensing fee - it could just be that Toshiba 'put the money in an envelope behind the clock on the mantlepiece', but didn't pay it in... Credit crunch, and all that...

Now, here's an excellent chance for the free and open OGG Vorbis compressed format to become widespread. No licensing fees required at all, and the quality of playback is every bit as good as MP3. If manufacturers used this, instead of MP3, everybody's happy. Well, except for the beneficiaries of the MP3 license fees!

I have one of these and its more than good enough for my needs, compact so just the job for my bedroom, theres a region hack in the region hacks section so playing my reg 1 disks is a bonus as I couldnt find a code for my previous player. The fact it wont play MP3 isnt an issue for me as I cant remember ever playing a CD on a dvd player nevermind an MP3, Id much rather have DivX/multiregion function than MP3 playback
